Senate blocks anti-sanctuary city bill
Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.), Ted Cruz (Texas) and Rand Paul (Ky.), all Republican candidates for president, voted for the bill.
The Senate voted today against a bill to punish "sanctuary cities" and certain undocumented immigrants.
The Republican initiative needed 60 votes to move forward, and failed with only 54.
The bill sponsored by Louisiana Sen. David Vitter would punish jurisdictions that prohibit the collection of immigration information or don't cooperate with federal requests, blocking them from receiving certain grants and funds.
Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.), Ted Cruz (Texas) and Rand Paul (Ky.) — all Republican candidates for president — voted for the bill.
The only Republican to vote with Democrats on the bill was Sen. Mark Kirk (Ill.) while Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) didn’t vote at all.
