The Department of Humans Services announced Friday that the licensing of the Berks County Family Detention Center would not be renewed and would officially be revoked.

The Berks County Detention Center is subcontracted by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement as one of three family detention centers, include two that are in Texas.

The Detention center’s request to increase its capacity last March was also denied, Matthew J. Jones, director of the Bureau of Human Services Licensing, wrote to the county in a letter dated Wednesday.

“ICE has been operating the center already in violation of federal law with some families being detained again for months at a time and now without a state license they will be in violation of state law,” Erika Almiron, executive director of Juntos, said. “Therefore, we demand the release of the families detained in Berks immediately, they should not endure one more day in unjust detention.”

The state license will be revoked on Feb. 21.The ending of the Detention Center is considered a victory by the Shut Down Berks Coalition, a grassroots coalition that fought to shut down the Berks County Detention Center.

The county has 10 days from the date of the letter to appeal.
