The California Division of Motor Vehicles is getting ready to issue about 1.4 million new driver’s license to undocumented immigrants starting 2015, when the Safe and Responsible Drivers Act goes into effect.

The DMV has hired about 900 new employees and opened temporary offices across the state in anticipation of this.

Undocumented immigrants seeking to obtain a license will go through the same process as everybody else —knowledge exam, vision test, and driving test— but their license won’t be the same.

“This card is not acceptable for official federal purposes”, reads the back of the license that can only be used to drive.

According to the DMV, one of the challenges is to verify the identity of the applicants.

When Nevada started issuing licenses to undocumented immigrants, 90 percent of them failed the written exam.
