California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that will allow the state to automatically register residents to vote when they go to a DMV office to get a driver’s license or renew one, reported Think Progress.
The new law, to be effective starting in 2016, could help register 6.6 million people eligible to vote.
Automatic registration is expected to particularly benefit voters of color.
Currently, only 62.8 percent of Latinos are registered in California, and only 28 percent of them voted in 2014.
