La Salle University Appoints its First Woman and Lay President

 Her name is Colleen M. Hanycz, a Canadian and arriving at La Salle University not only to become the 29th President of the educational institution, but also to make history, doubly. On the one hand, as the first woman to hold this office, and on the other, as the first lay President to hold this position on a non-interim bases throughout its 152 years of history. 

ith a Bachelor of Arts in History from St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School, Colleen M. Hanycz arrives after almost seven years as the head of Brescia University College in London, Ontario (Canada), to take the torch from Brother Michael J. McGinniss, who left this post held for 15 years, on May 31, 2014 –position held since then, on a temporary basis, by James P. Gallagher--.

“I feel deeply and humbly honored to be appointed as the next President of La Salle University”, Hanycz explained. “A feel a deep appreciation for the exceptional values of La Salle, its cause and its mission. I was educated in the Lasallian high school and understand that the educational charism of the Christian Brothers resides in a commitment to academic rigor, a strong sense of social justice and service, and dedication to a transforming educational experience. I wish to work with the entire community of La Salle to develop the potential of La Salle y position it as a leading catholic university”.  

An appointment, defined by the institution itself as historic, that was announced by William R. Sautter, ’71, Chair of La Salle’s Board of Trustees. “We are thrilled and excited to appoint Dr. Hanycz as the next President of La Salle University. She is an innovative academic leader, with an impressive record as an agent for positive change. She is the perfect person to maximize the potential of La Salle while continuing to honor our mission and distinctive values”, Sautter stated.
