Mexicans keep migrating to the U.S. in large numbers. However, since the end of the 2008 recession the number of Mexicans who have left the country is higher than the number of people who have migrated here.

According to data from the 2014 Mexican National Survey of Demographic Dynamics (ENADID) compiled by Pew Research Center, around one million Mexicans (including U.S. born children) left the country between 2009 and 2014. In that same time period, about 870,000 Mexicans left the country to come to the U.S.

The flow of Mexican immigrants may have decreased in the past years, but the nationality tops the list in terms of the U.S. foreign-born population. Around the 28 percent of foreign-born immigrants in the country are from Mexico, including the largest number undocumented immigrants.

The slow recovery of the U.S. economy after the recession and the deterioration of the job market are two reasons that immigrants returned to Mexico from the U.S., the Pew report says. However, around 61 percent of the returning migrants cited family reunification as the main reason. Only 14 percent of them cited deportation as a reason for their return.
