The number of people who live on our planet will continue to grow until the end of the century. According to the latest United Nation demographic report, the global population will rise from 7.9 billion people (the organization’s count for 2015) to 11.2 billion by year 2100. By 2050, the number of Earth inhabitants could be around 9.7 billion.

The conclusions of a demographic report by the United Nations were presented by the director of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ Population Division, John R. Wilmoth, in a conference in Seattle.

This progressive growth will be possible thanks to Africa. The UN expects that the number of people who live on that continent will go from 1.2 billion to between 3.4 and 5.6 billion by the end of the century.

Population growth will remain especially high in countries like Nigeria (Africa’s most populous country), where the organization projects a serious growth — from 182 million to 752 million by 2100.  The United Nations thinks there is a 90 percent chance that Nigeria will surpass the 439 million inhabitant mark by the end of the 21st century, about 2.5 times its current population.

Population by continents

Africa may be the continent that experiences the greatest growth but in 2100 Asia will remain the most populous continent on the planet. Currently around 4.4 billion people live in Asia. By 2050 the UN expects an increase of 5.3 billion, but Asia’s population then will decrease (by the end of the century) to 4.9 billion.

Europe will be another continent which decrease in population. There are around 738 million people living in Europe currently. In 2050 the number is projected to be 707 million, and in 2100 it will be further reduced to 646 million people.

A decrease of population will also be a reality in Latin America and the Caribbean, where around 643 million people live now. The population will peak at 784 million in 2050 but then fall to 721 million by 2100.

Population is projected to grow slowly in North America, from the current 358 million people to 500 million by 2100; and in Oceania, where it will go from 39 million to 71 by the end of the century.

The United States will experience an annual growth of 1.5 million people until 2100. There are 322 million currently living in the country and at the end of the century the number of U.S. inhabitants will be approximately 450 million.

The numbers presented by UN are just estimates, however, the organization believes that there is only a 23 percent chance that the population growth will stop before the end of the century.
