During a recent City Council committee hearing, the bills to add electronic cigarettes to Philadelphia's smoke-free law and ban their sales to minors were approved.

According to public health officials and scientists, e-cigarettes are safer than tobacco cigarettes, but the long-term the safety of e-cigarettes is still unknown. The Food and Drug Administration have yet to decide on how to regulate the product.

The battery-operated electronic cigarettes use electricity to turn a liquid (some with nicotine)  into vapors. Those using the product with nicotine will feel the similar effects of a tobacco cigarette without the unhealthy smoke, ash and tar.

Adding e-cigarettes to the Philly's smoke-free law will force its users to "smoke" outside of public places along with tobacco users. New Jersey was the first to add electronic cigarettes to their smoke-free law and ban sales to minors in 2010. At least 25 other states have followed in New Jersey's footsteps by banning sales to minors. If passed in Philadelphia, the ban could be in effect as early as the end of the month.
