Attorney General Kathleen Kane hold a press conference on Wednesday where she maintained her innocence and said the criminal charges against her are the result of her investigation that exposed thousands of pornographic emails on state government servers.

"I am innocent of any wrongdoing," Kane said. "I neither conspired with anyone nor did I ask or direct anyone to do anything improper or unlawful"

Last week Kane was charged with perjury, conspiracy, obstructing justice, official oppression and false swearing stemming from an investigation that began more than a year ago.

"My defense will not be that I am the victim of some old boys' network. It will be that I broke no laws of the Commonwealth. Period. Until now only a portion of the story has been told," Kane said at the press conference.

The Attorney General said the campaign to discredit her “began immediately after her office uncovered pornographic and explicit videos, images and jokes in hundreds of emails while examining how state prosecutors under her predecessors handled the child sex abuse case against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky,” wral.com reported

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, said Kane should step down, because he didn’t think she could continue to do her job while defending herself from the charges. “She is entitled to her day in court,” Wolf said. “But in the meantime, I am calling on her to step aside.”

Kane is free on $10,000 unsecured bail. Her preliminary hearing is Aug. 24, The Morning Call reported.
