Two Philadelphia buildings collapse in one week
Two buildings collapsed onto Philadelphia streets the same week as a fatal collapse shook Harlem.
The iconic blue and white "shirt corner" store that was in the process of demolition collapsed onto 3rd and Market streets Thursday afternoon.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the developer who planned to transform the brick building at the corner of 3rd and Market into more than fifty apartments was instructed by Licensing and Inspection at the end of January to condemn the structure, as it was, "imminently dangerous." The building was supposed to be demolished on Feb. 5.

While no injuries were reported, the collapse comes the same week as two others, one devastating collapse in Harlem that killed at least seven and injured dozens more. A row-house in Strawberry Mansion neighborhood collapsed yesterday, as well, injuring one passerby. The Department of Licensing and Inspection condemned the building years ago and received complaints as recent as last week.
Last June, the Salvation Army Thrift Store at 22nd and Market Streets collapsed, trapping people beneath. Six people lost their lives and fourteen sustained injuries, raising concerns about the frequencies of inspection and enforcement.
