Halloween is a much anticipated children's holiday in the U.S., for children show up on the doorstep, expecting a treat, and usually get one. The grownups, naturally, are jealous because they usually are left out of this October 31 party. Instead, they have to wait for their own party—the November elections.

This year, more than ever, as voters go the polls they will be met with more tricks than treats, if the recent television advertisements are to be believed. Each party exaggerates or lies, depending on your point of view. The Republicans point fingers, stating that the Democrats are to blame for the lack of jobs and poor state of the economy, conveniently forgetting that it took the Bush administration 8 years to destroy a previously strong economy, aided, of course, by the horrific events of 9/11. The Democrats are in a state of shock, wondering how The Tea Party has captured the imagination (and votes) of the American people when most of their candidates, due to their collectively tiny political IQs, are far better suited to being candidates in beauty pageants than candidates for Congress or other public office.

However you view it, no matter what your political affiliation, it is clear that politics this election year is full of tricks, not treats, for neither party is willing or able to address the continually buried critical issue: immigration reform. 2010 has come and almost gone, yet the Dream Act remains unpassed. Each party offers a poison apple, striving to outshout the other, screaming that they, if elected, will quickly throw people who "don't belong" out of this country, never addressing how they will physically ( and humanely) deport over 12 million individuals whose lives are so incredibly interwoven with this country that separating them would destroy the very fabric of America. Neither party is willing to face the plain facts: employers will continue to hire illegal immigrants because they possess the old-fashioned American work ethic and illegal immigration will continue to exist unless an enforceable system is put into place that simultaneously protects and serves the needs of the U.S. labor force.

This Halloween adult Americans might very well finally be sick of eating poisoned candy, of inhaling lies and false promises in the same breath. They can best show their distaste for our broken political system by voting, and making sure that the elections are too close to call. In this manner, both parties might finally "get it" and understand that Americans are simply tired of politics as usual and really do want and expect immigration reform in 2011…or else!
