Multi-billion-dollar tech companies have long dodged tax law by expanding oversees and leaping through loopholes, but a three-year-old French tax law may have finally caught up with them. Google now owes anywhere from $693 million to $1.3 billion U.S. to the French government, according to Le Monde

The company has stood up to allegations that their taxes have not yet been paid, as do other companies who have been targeted by French tax authorities, such as McDonald's, which supposedly owes billions in U.S. dollars. Two years ago, BBC reported that Apple paid just 2 percent in corporate taxes outside the U.S. Britain taxes corporations at a rate of 24 percent.
