NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden was recently announced to join the Freedom of Press Foundation's (FPF) board of directors. Snowden was selected to join the board due to his recent actions in releasing the NSA documents to the public.

"Accountability journalism can't be done without the courageous acts exemplified by Snowden, and we need more like him," FPF's co-founder Daniel Ellsberg said.

The Freedom of the Press Foundation was first founded in 2012 to support the First Amendment and public journalism.

Freedom of the Press Foundation has raised money for news organizations such as WikiLeaks, Bureau of Investigative Journalism, and Center for Public Integrity. The organization are currently raising money for open-source encryption tools.

Snowden will join the board of directors in February 2014.
