Penn plans expansion across the river
West Philadelphia expansion may not be enough for Penn—the university is moving into South Philly.
University of Pennsylvania is looking to cross the Schuylkill from University City to dig its roots into South Philly.
The university is planning to develop a research and commercial park near Greys Ferry where DuPont Co. lead paint factory once operated before it was shutdown five years ago.
Known as the South Bank plan, the 23 acres developed in partnership with the city will revitalize an industrial corridor that has been in decline.
The "Pennovation Center" will combine research and product development, from a K-9 unit study center to a bio garden and robotics lab.
