Undocumented immigrants who own businesses like fast food restaurants, discount stores and Latino groceries are often a magnet for robberies in Langley Park, Md. Their pockets are often stuffed with a day's or even week's work of wages earning them the street term "Walking ATM." According to a report by NPR, undocumented immigrants walk around with money in their pockets because they may be sharing a house or an apartment with several other people and are afraid to the leave the money behind. As a result, a thief will see them walking down the street, rob them and get away.

These robberies are not often reported because undocumented business owners are afraid to call the police and file a report.  Prince George County Police officer Juan Damien is making an effort to stop the robberies by driving his patrol car and keeping on the lookout for suspicious activity, according to NPR, he doesn't ask victims about their immigration status.

Casa de Maryland, s local advocacy group, has been showing immigrants how to open bank accounts with the help of local banks. Undocumented workers can open a bank account with a U.S. taxpayer identification number (ITIN) and passport or ID, which can be obtained regardless of status.
