Let us expose some falsehoods.

Race, culture, language
and religion remain the major fault lines through which this and all
other nations, no matter how "enlightened", remain utterly fractured.

"Good
moral character" a common term used in immigration law, when it comes
to the populace and politicians dancing to their tune conveniently
masks deep-seated fears and prejudice.  For the record, any country in
the world is entitled to reserve admission only for persons it deems
being of "good moral character".

For example, anywhere in the world
a drunk-driver causing injury or death must be punished with absolute
severity.  The unfortunate reality is, adding insult to injury, if such
a criminal happens to be an immigrant, this is immediately used to cast
an ominous shadow on any and all immigrants.

This was the case in
Virginia Beach when an "illegal immigrant" drunk-driver killed two
teenage girls in March 2007.  Along with the resulting community
outrage, anti immigration activists seized the opportunity claiming
these and other victims "would be alive if the borders were sealed",
reported the Washington Post.

What good does blaming immigrants
and blurring the real scope of the scourge of drunk driving possibly
do?     The fact is, one person dies every half-hour and another is
injured every 2 minutes in America due to drunk driving.  Sealing the
border will fix it?

Xenophobic organizations such as "FIRE" (acronym
for Federal Immigration Reform and Enforcement) denounce on its website
"the invasion and occupation of the United States by illegal aliens
from foreign nations", and it goes further in asking "How many women,
children, or law enforcement officers… died at the hands of illegal
aliens?"

The reality is, people presumed not endowed with a "legal"
status are denied not only legal privileges, but also basic human
rights altogether. They have no recourse before any courts, and undergo
arrests based on racial profiling –which means anyone meeting the
infamous Supreme Court test of "Mexican appearance".

How else can
we explain that of all the arrests of immigrants carried out by local
police and "referred" to immigration enforcement "ICE", they can only
charge 14% of those arrested?  Lets think about it, one hundred persons
are stopped and arrested because they drive past a stop sign and have a
"Mexican appearance".   Of those only 14 happen to be undocumented, or
even legal residents but with the unfortunate fact of a 20 year old
conviction for a misdemeanor.

If true "good moral character" still
characterizes any of us inside our national borders, we must urgently
weed out any hatred that easily fuels genocides like those that have
occurred in recent decades.
