Students from the University of Michigan protested the lack of diversity on Jan. 20th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The black student union voiced their frustrations over the university 's declining enrollment rate of black students. The members gave a list of seven demands to be completed in seven days.

Jennifer Gratz, a crusader against the use of Affirmative Action in college admissions says the list of demands are unconstitutional and criticizes the black student union. According to USA Today, Gratz says they want special and separate treatment based on their race.

The black student union says the list of demands are targeted to make black students to feel more welcomed and empowered. They want University of Michigan to increase diversity on campus. Less than 5 percent of black and Latino students enrolled last year in comparison to over 66 percent  of white students.

An online video of the protest shows one member saying they would resort to physical action if demands are met within the time frame.

Geralyn Gaines, the secretary for black student union said any activism the students engage in will be non-violent and they are hoping to have a discussion with university leaders in next coming days.

In November, the black student union launched a twitter campaign to raise awareness about race and diversity using the hashtag #BBUM which stands for "Being Black at the University of Michigan."  The campaign received more than 10,000 tweets.
