Everyone agrees that Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods. But how many can you name? and moreover, do you know how they got their names?

Mental Floss published a full compilation on the back story behind Philly neighborhoods and their unusual names, and some stories are pretty unexpected.
It turns out Society Hill has nothing to do with high society and it was named after the Free Society of Traders established by William Penn. Powelton was the name of the Powel family mansion that gave this west Philadelphia neighborhood its name.

And Olney’s name was chosen by Alexander Wilson, great admirer of poet William Cowper who lived in Olney, England.

The site  is working its way across the country and publishing how the neighborhoods in other cities got their names as well. Check out the full Philly list at Mental Floss.
