Philadelphia gas workers, community members, and city officials rallied outside of City Hall on the morning of June 19 against the pending sale of Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW).

Back in March, Mayor Nutter announced that the Connecticut energy company UIL Holdings Corp., agreed to buy PGW for $1.86 billion. According to Nutter, the sale would bring millions to city's pension fund, after PGW's debts are paid off. However, City Controller Alan L. Butkovitz stated the sale could bring in less money than expected.

Currently, City Council is awaiting a report from a consultation company Concentric Energy Advisors to analyze the sale. The timing is crucial because Council's last session before its three-month summer recess is today and the company looking to buy PGW can abandon the deal on July 15 if it isn't approved by that date.

Former Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street, Councilwoman Marian b. Tasco, and Councilman Dennis O'Brien were among the city officials who spoke out against the sale of PGW.

"It's not losing money; it is providing quality service for the people of this city. It's not broke! Why should we try to fix it?" stated Street.

However, City Council President Darrell L. Clarke stated on Tuesday that "we don't anticipate" introducing legislation this week to sell the Philadelphia Gas Works to a private buyer."
