Groundwork: Justice in the Birthplace of America” is a film about what happens when people stop putting up with injustice and start building a movement, and features Philadelphians from different walks of life fighting against poverty and discrimination.

Media Mobilizing Project (MMP), a non-profit organization that utilizes media to organize poor and working people to tell their stories, released the film in 2015 and now wants to take the project on the road.

The organization launched a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of extending its message and joining forces with activists across the country. "That's what Groundwork is all about — how our struggles are interconnected and how we can stand up together," stated the campaign.

They need help to visit 20 cities and towns on a summer tour, and the clock is ticking. The project will only be funded if at least $20,000 is pledged by Mar 15, 2016.

Directed by Milena Velis, a former AL DÍA News reporter and current media educator and organizer for MMP, the film examines different social justice movements, from Shymara, a cashier at Popeye’s that risks her job to fight for $15 an hour and a better future for her son, to Celia Mota, who drives without a license each day to take her kids to school, and fights to change policies that could break her family apart.

“‘Groundwork’ is the story of a few of the many unsung heroes around us who give me real hope that we can create a better future. They are people who refuse to accept their circumstances of poverty, discrimination and marginalization” Milena Velis film director
