In celebration of Puerto Rican women and the ‘Grito de Lares’ (cry of Lares), Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito, the first Puerto Rican woman elected as Speaker of the New York City Council, will visit Taller Puertorriqueño on Saturday Sept. 27.

'El Grito de Lares’, also referred to as the Lares uprising, was the first major revolt against Spanish rule on September 23, 1868. In honor of this historical date, Taller Puertorriqueño is hosting the event with the National Boricua Human Rights Network.

The Latino organization will host a VIP reception with a live performance by ‘Jíbaro con Tumbao,’ and the projection of the documentary ‘El Antillano’, directed by Tito Román, the story of “the father of the Puerto Rican homeland,” Ramón Emeterio Betances.

The reception with Councilwoman Mark-Viverito will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., followed by the documentary projection from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tickets for the VIP reception, that include the documentary, are available for $50. Tickets to attend only the documentary projection are $10.

The event will take place at Taller Puertorriqueño, located on  2721 N. 5th Street. For more information visit Taller Puertorriqueño.
