On Wednesday Aug. 12 around 150 people marched through North Philly to protest police brutality, just a few days after the first anniversary of Michael Brown’s murder.

Two famous faces (and voices) decided to join the #BlackJoyPhilly crowd: R&B singer Janelle Monae and artist Jidenna.

Both spoke out against police brutality and encouraged the crowd to do so as well.

“In the wake of police brutality and numerous other things we wanted to make sure that the world knew that Black joy is still important and it’s relevant,” Melanie McCoy, one of the organizers, said to NBC Philadelphia. “As important as Black rage is, black joy is equally important. We feel like we can use both.”

Philly Student Union (@215studentunion) documented the peaceful protest on Twitter:

On Aug. 13 the two singers joined a similar rally that took place in New York City.
