An Aspira student was killed while riding his bicycle on Sunday in the Hunting Park area.

Philadelphia police said Adelso Matos-Garcia, 17 years old, died after being hit by an alleged drunk driver on the 600 block of west Cayuga Street in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia, CBSPhilly reported.

According to the reports, “the incident happened shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday night when the teen was riding his bike and a driver allegedly ran a red light and hit him. A 28-year-old man now faces charges,” CBSPhilly reported.

Matos-Garcia was a member of the student government at the Olney Charter School. “He was a leader and always happy. His passion was bikes, he was always riding a bike, he use to come to the school by bike,” said Sadiqa Lucas, director of Aspira Exel/Aspira Academy.

According to the school, Matos-Garcia lived with his aunt and uncle, two brothers and one cousin, all from Dominican Republic. “We embrace his family in this moment of deep sadness. He will be remembered as very charismatic and with a great spirit,” the school stated.

Through a media release, Aspira Inc., PA said the institution would “like to make a call to City Hall and local political leaders to increase awareness among drivers with respect to cyclists. With Philadelphia becoming such a cyclist friendly city, many of our students as well as Latinos and minorities in general use this transportation system,” the school stated.

Matos-Garcia’s family has made arrangements for his burial to take place in the Dominican Republic.
