AL DÍA 40 Under Forty Honoree: Stephanie Perez-Jarmul
At the 40 Under Forty event, Stephanie Perez-Jarmul will be one of the 40 honorees.
The inaugural AL DÍA 40 Under Forty event will be a showcase of the most diverse and impactful young professionals in various fields of work across the Philadelphia region.
At the virtual event, taking place August 20, 2020, Stephanie Perez-Jarmul, 36, will be one of the 40 honorees. She is the Field Education Specialist at Temple University.
As part of the lead-up to the event, AL DÍA asked each of the 40 honorees the same three questions and collected their responses.
Here are Stephanie Perez-Jarmul’s responses:
A challenge in my professional journey has been imposter syndrome, manifested as feelings of inadequacy within my profession, dismissing my hard work, questioning my accomplishments and internalizing this into a fear of being found out. My intersectionality compounds this issue for me, as a Latina first generation high school graduate who grew up in deep poverty. I must remind myself of my work to gain an expertise in my field and my worthiness to have a seat at the table in academia.
Receiving a full-time faculty appointment before the age of 30 has been one of my proudest achievements. My role in piloting a bachelor’s degree in social work at Esperanza College is a highlight in my career as I was able to serve as a leader within a program rooted in a collective culture providing nontraditional Latinx and African American students in North Philadelphia formal training and practice experience to prepare them for positions as social workers in their own communities.
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” I don’t think philosopher George Santayana expected his words to continue to resonate so strongly decades later. One manner to address inclusivity in this country to provide students with accurate history lessons that include the perspectives and voices of the marginalized and oppressed starting in primary school. Confronting our country’s history both good and bad can help raise an empathetic and socially just generation.
