For our second Spotlight article, AL DÍA conducted a Q&A with local entrepreneur and founder of elevate Health & performance, an integrated health studio and facility in Center City Philadelphia.

Check out the Q&A here:

What can you tell us about your background?
I went to school at Temple University with a B.S. in Kinesiology. I did my internship at the Sporting Club at the Bellevue, where I met many great people and learned a lot about the personal training industry.

What and/or who inspired you to enter the health & fitness world?
I love sports and helping people feel empowered. I thought I would continue on to Physical Therapy School, but really enjoyed the rapport I could build with clients, and see the progress they could achieve with my help.

What advice would you give to someone who, fitness, may not be a big part of their life? Why is fitness important?
Just move. It doesn’t have to be the perfect plan, and it can have no rhyme or reason at the beginning. Then it becomes part of your lifestyle, and it’s always good to get an expert’s advice, and make sure you’re not doing anything that could injure yourself. Fitness is important because we want to be self dependent as we age, and be able to move with confidence just to be able to do the activities of daily living. Strength is healthcare.

Can you talk a little bit about Elevate Health?
Elevate Health & Performance started as a personal training studio, and has expanded into an integrated health facility where in addition to personal training, we do physical therapy, dietician services, and massage. We want to deliver health, and have a vision for a holistic practice where we rethink how health is delivered.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve encountered as a young entrepreneur?
Trying to wear all the hats in business. It’s easy to do all of the minutiae of everyday tasks. It’s more important to set up processes, and be able to step aside to let other people grow. Work on the business, not just in the business.

If you were not in the wellness field, where do you see yourself?
I would be in the restaurant and hospitality industry. I enjoy great food, people, and service. I actually don’t consider myself in the fitness industry, but in the hospitality industry. I like to treat people as the individual as they are.

Where do you hope to see Elevate Health five years down the line? Is expansion potentially on the horizon?
I see elevate Health & Performance being a one stop shop for health. My next growth opportunity is to have an in-house doctor and psychologist to be a well-rounded holistic practice. Having a doctor will elevate us to truly be able to deliver health.  We want to get as far from a gym as possible, be able to provide careers for people, and be of great service to our community.
