Oliver takes his son to the voting booth
"I want him to understand his civic responsibilites start now," Oliver said.
Mayoral candidate Doug Oliver voted Tuesday morning in East Oak Lane, just a few blocks from his house. He ushered his son, Douglas Ifany Jr., 12, into the voting booth with him, where they spent almost ten minutes talking through the candidate selections and how the process works.

Since declaring his candidacy in January, Oliver has led a low-budget grassroots campaign effort, reaching out to commuters every morning on public transit.
Despite low polling numbers, he remains optimistic about victory today in the Democratic primary.
"Anybody who gets into the mayor's office had best understand that mandate to fix our schools and create jobs in this city," Oliver said after emerging from the booth. "How we get there I don't think people particularly care. They just want us to get there finally so we don't have these conversations year after year. I'll be embarrassed if four years from now after I've been mayor, we're still having conversations about our schools, at least pre-K through 4th [grade]."

For the remainder of election day, Oliver and his campaign team will be visiting polling stations in the northwest section of the city until their closing time at 8 p.m. He is tentatively attending an election night party in Mount Airy to wait for the ballot results to come in.
