In the midst of a COVID-19 surge in Philly, city officials have reiterated the opportunity for students to gain free internet access through the PHLConnectED program.

As the pandemic has once again disrupted in-person learning, this is a resource to consider.

PHLConnectED is a program that connects pre-K-12 student households with free internet access. The program also comes with digital skills training and support.

Participants of the PHLConnectED program will not be charged out-of-pocket expenses nor installation fees.

City of Philadelphia officials are suggesting that eligible residents utilize PHLConnectED if they are without internet access as some schools make a move to remote learning.

Mark Wheeler, Chief Information Officer for the City of Philadelphia, reiterated PHLConnectED’s opportunities in a press release:

“As virtual learning again becomes more prevalent at many schools throughout the city, we want to emphasize that PHLConnectED is available to support families,” said Wheeler. “The resources exist to make sure every student is able to get online so that learning continues uninterrupted by COVID.”

In the past, PHLConnectED has provided over 18,700 individual internet connections across the city. This resource is available to Philadelphia families and students in need of free internet access.

By calling 2-1-1, families with pre-K-12 children can inquire about PHLConnectED’s free internet access. For language services, press 8. Participants can consult the Digital Navigator for assistance.

Pre-K-12 student households qualify for PHLConnectED under certain circumstances. Pre-K-12 student households qualify if they:

  • Are without internet access.
  • Have mobile phone internet access only.
  • Are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity.
  • Have students who participate in remote learning in a setting without internet access.

Pre-K-12 student households already with internet access qualify for PHLConnectED if they:

  • Participate in public benefit programs with income qualifications like Medicaid.
  • Have students designated as English language learners.
  • Have students who receive special education services.
