One in 10 deaths among U.S. adults is related to excessive drinking, an unhealthy habit that cost the country around $250 billion in 2010, according to a 2015 study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The average alcohol consumption varies greatly among the states, however. People in Dubuque, Iowa, (the city with the highest alcohol consumption in the country) drink more than those who live in the state of Mississippi, for example.

Diseases related to excessive drinking are not the only risk factor. In states like Montana, around 52.2 percent of the fatal car accidents are alcohol related.
