The Houston School District is investigating just what happened on Sept. 2 when a Sam Houston High School freshman was taken to the ground for using her cell phone to check up on her mother, who reportedly suffers from kidney problems.

Ixel Perez, 14, told KHOU-TV that she was sent into the hallway for using her phone to call her mother. The school assistant principal reportedly asked for the phone, and when Perez refused to give it over in the midst of her conversation, the assistant principal used a phone himself to call the school district police. Perez once more refused to give the phone to police. A witness took an Instagram video of two officers pinning Perez to the floor while a third stood close by.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the two officers involved are no longer at the school and the district is investigating the case, however comments on the article largely supported the officer's decision.
