Trick or treating is one of the most fun ways for children to celebrate Halloween. But for kids with food allergies, it can be more of a trick than a treat.

This year, Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), a non-profit group that wants people with food allergies to be “safe and included,” has created the Teal Pumpkin Project to help kids with food allergies celebrate Halloween.

FARE is asking people to make Halloween friendly to children with food allergies by providing non-food treats for trick-or-treaters and by placing a teal painted pumpkin (the color of food allergy awareness) outside of their house to indicate they have non-food treats.

“The Teal Pumpkin Project is designed to promote safety, inclusion and respect of individuals managing food allergies – and to keep Halloween a fun, positive experience for all,” says the organization’s website.

Their website includes a list of suggested low-cost items that can be given away instead of candy. It includes items such as glow sticks, pencils, stickers, vampire fangs, spider rings and other Halloween themed items. FARE also asks that the items be placed in a separate bowl from candy.
