In 2018, Olympic gymnastics legend Simone Biles gave a testimony about the abuses suffered at the hands of Larry Nassar, today sentenced to 173 years in prison, hoping to encourage other women to denounce the abusive behavior of the Olympic team doctor.

The American gymnast who, due to emotional issues, had to abandon several of the competitions in the last Olympics in Tokyo, went to the Senate to testify, once more on Wednesday, Sept. 15 against Nassar.

The Senate Judiciary Committee reviewed some of the discrepancies in the FBI investigation, whose report, published only until July of this year, revealed numerous errors and delays, as well as cover-ups, which allowed Nassar to continue his abuses for several months after the case was opened.

Although reliving these moments was extremely difficult for the victims, especially after a process that was slow and permissive, the Committee considered it necessary to avoid future tragedies.

FBI Director Christopher Wray will also be held accountable to the committee regarding the flaws found in the case. He will also have to answer on account of why no charges were brought against agents who violated FBI code.

The legend's testimony

"If you allow a predator to harm children, the consequences will be swift and severe," the Olympic star told the committee, while stressing that in addition to blaming Larry Nassar, she also blamed the system that allowed and perpetuated his abuses.

The first victim to officially report the doctor, Maggie Nichols, also testified on behalf of the more than 200 victims who reported Nassar to court in 2018. At the end of the process, the predator would be accused of abusing more than 330 women from the U.S. gymnastics team and from Michigan State University.

Biles is the most recognized athlete on the doctor's list, who, taking advantage of his position, systematically abused girls. The multiple medalist confessed to being relieved after publicly denouncing Nassar.
