Thousands of people processed down the streets of San Salvador, El Salvador's capital city, in preparation for the beatification of Archbishop Oscar Romero as a martyr at noon today. The citizens of the Central American country have long called the archbishop, slain during the bloody civil war of the 1980s, "Saint Romero" and the step of beatification puts Romero in line for canonization as a saint officially recognized by the Roman Catholic Church.
