We can now add a new profession to David Oh’s resume: talent scout.

On Aug. 7 the councilman announced an initiative that promises to promote local musical talent, and at the same time, the economy in the city.

As chairman of the Committee on Global Opportunities and the Creative/Innovative Economy, Oh expects PHL Live Center Stage will serve as a platform that launches Philly musicians into the musical scene.

“We want to recognize music as not just a hobby, but a job that needs to be paid.  I am no musician but I want to make sure musicians in the city can succeed,” Oh said.

Starting Friday, local performers will be able to upload songs and videos to the site phllive.org (which goes live the same day). Those 18 and older can choose to participate among 10 different genres. From R&B, rock, gospel, to country/folk or hip hop. Five semifinalists will be picked from each category.

A panel of experts will judge each of the contestants on the creativity/originality of the musical piece, the performance and the crowd interaction, as well as the technical competence.

“There are a lot of talented people in Philadelphia that just don’t have an avenue to find success,” Oh said.

PHL Live Center Stage will also be a musical festival open to the public.

Although there are still details to define,  for now we know that 50 finalists will compete in 10 battles of the bands in local venues like Hard Rock Cafe, MilkBoy, World Café Live and Underground Arts. Tickets will be available for $3.

Those who prove the most talented will go to the final. A concert at Trocadero scheduled for December, with the chance to receive awards such as free studio time and $500.
