Olmeca, the hip hop Chicano “artivist” from Los Angeles, will be headlining a concert Saturday July 11 outside the Berks Detention Center in Pennsylvania as part of a national week of action against family detention.

The concert will also feature other Latin alternative acts like Son Revoltura, Son Cosita Seria, ¡Aparato!, Francisco Benito and Las Zumbatistas.

On June 8, 10 women detained in the Berks Family Detention Center began a work strike citing unfair treatment, neglect, and abuse. Later that month, the Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh C. Johnson released a statement concluding substantial changes must be made to detention practices when it comes to families.

Immigrant advocate groups like Juntos, who is organizing the concert, are calling to end family detention programs and close detention centers across the nation.

“Through music, art and culture we hope to move the women inside the Berks Detention Center to keep fighting, and to resonate beyond to help others in our community understand the issue so they can also fight to end family detention programs,” said Erika Almiron, director of Juntos.

The free concert will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at 1040 Berks Rd. in Leesport, PA. For more information, visit the Facebook event page
