Engineers at the University of Washington in Seattle are developing an experimental technology to protect women against HIV that would be as easy as using a tampon.

NPR reported that a new device is in the works, where high concentrations of microbicide can be interwoven into the fabric, and the material dissolves quickly when it gets wet. The vaginal tissue is infused with the microbicide within six minutes.

According to the article, a staggering 84 percent of women diagnosed with HIV contract the virus through heterosexual sex.  As of now the only protection against HIV for women is the female condom, a not so practical or accessible option.

The ultimate goal is trying to develop a device that combines microbicides and a contraceptive spermicide to protect against pregnancy, HIV, herpes and other sexually transmitted diseases.Unfortunately the product is still in its testing stages and is far from being available in drugstores.
