A comedy set in North Philly, an undocumented struggling to make it and a fictional crime drama are among the scenarios presented by local filmmakers at Filmadelphia, a series by the Philadelphia Film Society (PFS) Theater at the Roxy

The August showcase features ‘Dice’, a film directed by AL DÍA News content producer Viraj Nayar, who this year won ‘Best Undergraduate Film’, ‘Best Fiction Film’ and a ‘Derek Freese Filmmaker Award’ for the project at the 2014 Diamond Screen Film Festival Awards.

Filmadelphia is a monthly film series that provides an avenue for local filmmakers of all ages, levels and backgrounds to showcase their work and elicit audience feedback. According to the program, the series serves as a vehicle to encourage and identify new talented filmmakers throughout the region.

Admission is free of charge and includes a Q&A at the theater and post-screening happy hour at Cavanaugh’s Rittenhouse to continue the conversation.

A nuanced comedy amidst difficult circumstances, DICE follows Jamil, a street-smart youth living day to day with the odds against him. Unable to break into the professional world, Jamil tries to get by with whatever work he can get. Despite his smarts and charisma, his life remains unbalanced and future unknown. When fate suddenly gives Jamil the break he’s been looking for, he learns firsthand that life is a gamble.

Director Viraj Nayar is a recent graduate of Temple University. The story is set in North Philadelphia.

Ying is an undocumented immigrant struggling to make it in America. When she applies for a job in the fashion industry, it is through naive hopes of gaining a work visa, and possibly making it big. However, being so used to hiding, she has spun a web of lies that ultimately put her daughter, and her freedom, in danger.

Director Lisa Jiang created LIE as a Temple University senior thesis project. The film features Philadelphia’s Chinatown and Center City.

Inspired by true events, SLASHED is a fictional crime drama about two neighbors who team up to catch a serial tire slasher that’s been targeting their Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood. Philadelphia-area native, Chad Schultz, shot on location in the Mayfair section of Northeast Philadelphia, just blocks from where the real crimes were committed. The short was self-financed on a micro-budget, and represents the work of
numerous Greater Philadelphia cast, crew and production artists.
