Visual artist Ana Teresa Fernandez led the project “Erasing the Border,”  to showcase how two countries can coexist peacefully and in a homage to the thousands of people that have died attempting to cross the border.

Born in Mexico and raised in California, Fernandez led 30 volunteers for six hours of painting the Nogales border fence between Arizona and the Mexican state of Sonora on Oct. 13, Yahoo News reported.

“Thinking as a conceptual visual artist, what I had in my arsenal of weapons was paint,” Fernandez said of the project. “It was a very peaceful action in which I literally began erasing it by painting the fence sky blue.”

In an interview with Al Jazeera Fernandez explained that for her the wall is a fabric of aggression, sadness and frustration. “It is a wall that tells people who to hate and whose life is not worthy of living. It has become a handkerchief of tears (a metal one),” she says in the video.
