The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development examined hundreds of reported bribery cases from around the world — 128 in the U.S. — and found that two in three cases involved just four industries. More than half of the reports showed that high-level executives either paid bribes or orchestrated the bribes to industry leaders or government officials.
So what are the corrupt industries (or at least the worst at hiding their corruption)?
Extraction
The booming global energy industry was the number one industry for the number of bribes reported — 81 altogether for oil and gas companies.
Construction
The construction industry was one of the top for bribes, and many were directed towards public employees for contracts and permits.Transparency International’s Bribe Payers Index of 2011 actually ranked the public works and construction industry as the most corrupt in the world, right above utilities, property management, legal services, and oil and gas.
Transportation
The transportation industry tied with construction, each with more than 60 reported incidents of bribery.
Information and Communication
With 10 percent of the reported bribes, the communications industry — from television networks to news broadcasts — made the list of the four most corrupt sectors on Earth.
