Tom Brokaw’s profoundly ignorant remarks about Hispanics and assimilation were surprising and shocking, but the rush from many in the Latino community to prove him wrong by justifying themselves in the worst possible way was even more so.

Speech delivered to the EPA for the 2009 Hispanic Heritage Month: Embracing the Fierce Urgency of No

 10/12/2009 - 11:40

Over 33 years ago, my law school professor began his lecture with the
words:  “It is customary of barbarians to fear strangers.” Back then I
had no idea what he meant. However, when we fast forward to the last
few years in our country, and the fear of strangers all Americans
cannot ignore post 9/11, and especially to what we have seen take place
in the Delaware Valley recently,  his words take on new meaning.

The new visa quota numbers for October 2009 have arrived and for many
categories, especially employment based third preference (EB3), the

years for those already on the list who first began their employment
based immigrant visa process in 2001.

A PENNDOT update: the end of driver's licenses for those with only ITINS

 09/16/2009 - 14:08

The PENNDOT driver’s license dilemma has finally reached its end stage.
As a result of   Pennsylvania state laws requiring Pennsylvania drivers
to be legally present in the U.S., which means with USCIS
authorization, PENNDOT has now sent out a batch of final letters to
those whose licenses appear to not be valid based on incorrect
information in the PENNDOT system or not valid because they were issued
to individuals who have only an ITIN, not a social security number.

The fight among book worms

The fight among book worms

A big battle is brewing in of all places the library. It all started
when Google, the Internet search engine and media giant, began scanning
millions of books without permission. That led the Authors Guild and
the Association of American Publishers to file a class-action suit. Now
a $125 million settlement might be in the offing that could lead to a
book registry for author and publisher rights and royalties and a huge
online archive of millions of books.

A Latino Leader Reflects On Ted Kennedy

 09/03/2009 - 15:09

I was deeply saddened when I heard the news that Senator Ted Kennedy
had died. I had followed the Kennedy family since 1960 when John
Kennedy campaigned for the presidency. Like many people my age, I
remember exactly where I was when the death of President Kennedy was
announced, and where I was when the assassination of Senator Robert
Kennedy was announced. And so it was again at 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday,
Aug. 28.

Lo que más me gusta de Filadelfia

 08/29/2009 - 09:00

temper tantrums every second.

To Go or Not to Go: The Risk of Consular processing

 08/13/2009 - 14:22

One constant is the justified fear that remains when
individuals are told that they must leave the security of the U.S. in
order to return to their home countries to “consular process”, to
attend an immigrant visa interview at the U.S. Consulate in their home
country, in order to obtain Lawful Permanent Resident status in the U.S.
