There is surely no greater sign of the bankruptcy of American foreign policy than its Afghanistan policy. After 15 years of war and the deployment of hundreds of thousands of troops, a new president entered the Oval Office poised to fundamentally change that policy. Within months he presented, with great fanfare, a continuation of the same. The result: The United States is now firmly locked into its forever war in Afghanistan.

Digital addicts, take heart: You don’t need to quit the internet to benefit greatly from more time away from your devices. Just try it for a few minutes a day and see how it goes. In fact, as soon as you finish reading this column, treat yourself to some silence.

There’s nothing that digital addicts hate more than being told they need to pay closer attention to real life.

In a recent screed titled “It Would Be Great if Celebrities Could Stop Talking About the Joys of ‘Unplugging,’” Slate blogger Heather Schwedel complained that comedian Aziz Ansari’s declaration of independence from the internet in a GQ magazine interview amounts to a form of snobbery.

The fact is that even before the almost unbelievable catastrophes left in their wake by hurricanes Irma and Maria, and the terrible earthquake in Mexico, President Trump had already made this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month the worst ever.
