[OP-ED]: The worst day in the history of US soccer

 10/17/2017 - 16:44
Many defined it as the worst day in the history of US soccer. And it was. It is also true that Panama was awarded a score that did not cross the goal line, but it is also true that the final score at Trinidad and Tobago reaffirmed the saying: “Things that do not start right do not finish right”.  EFE

Everything seemed to be finally right after blowing out Panama in Orlando, 4-0. Team USA only needed a tie on the road against a weak Trinidad and Tobago team that had won one of nine qualifying games in the final six-team tournament to secure at least a wild card spot for Russia 2018. In fact, even a loss could get the Americans in the World Cup if either Panama or Honduras did not win…

Real Madrid midfielder Isco Alarcón celebrates his goal, first of the team against Atletico Madrid, during the return leg of the Champions League semifinals. EFE

Nobody doubts the skill level of Francisco Alarcón “Isco” since he was selected in 2012 as the Golden Boy: Europe’s top Under 21 soccer player. Despite being born in Benalmádena in Málaga, the finesse midfielder was developed in Valencia’s farm system, but the club let him go back to his native province not wanting to renew his contract in 2011.

Geoff Hurst’ goal in the championship game of the 1966 World Cup or Diego Maradona’s hand score in the 1986 World Cup. Without going that far in time everybody remembers Sergio Ramos’ goal in an offside position in the last Champions League final contest or, less than a month ago the penalty kick awarded to Barcelona for a non-existing foul on Luis Suárez by a Paris Saint-Germain defender…

I still remember it very well. It happened in Dortmund on the last Tuesday of September, during the typical Champions League night in which Borussia hosted defending champion Real Madrid. Christian Pulisic was amazing. He came from the bench with only 17 minutes remaining, replacing Ousmane Dembélé’s, and turned things around 180 degrees.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup has ended and in many ways, the questions surrounding United States soccer are the same as when the tournament began.

A lot of people, both those who are long-time familiar with the USA program and those who were just on board for the quadrennial party, have questioned what exactly did the United State team do in Brazil that it did not do four years ago in South Africa?

EE.UU. vivito y coleando
