[OP-ED]: Will Ecuador’s new president get rid of Julian Assange?

 04/14/2017 - 09:37
The incoming president has promised reform. But first Moreno needs to get his troublesome houseguest off the country’s couch so Assange can stop sucking all the air out of Ecuador’s faint presence on the world stage.
English

Last week, the people of Ecuador elected a leftist named after the communist dictator Vladimir Lenin as their new president.

It’s always a double-edged sword when Ecuador is in the news -- in the U.S., the little-known country at the equator usually flies far under the radar.

[OP-ED]: America’s parliamentary disaster

 04/07/2017 - 12:29
For decades, the United States governed itself by a system that favored centrist consensus -- not always wise, to be sure -- whereas our invisible parliamentary system does just the opposite. It empowers the fringes and weakens the center. True, most of our major social and political conflicts have independent origins. But parliamentary politics is making them worse.
English

America’s Congress is quietly becoming a European-style parliament -- and the transformation isn’t for the good. Congress is fanning, not defusing, conflict.

The vote on the bill was previously scheduled for Thursday but the lack of consensus among conservatives has postponed the process. If the legislation fails, there won’t be another effort to make good on the flagship Republican promise to replace Obama’s Affordable Care Act, Trump said.
