The future of a statue in the likeness of highly contentious former police commissioner and mayor Frank Rizzo is on the fritz, particularly after this past week’s rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia which began as a protest to keep a memorial to Confederate General Robert E. Lee from being removed.

When students are hungry, they miss class -- sometimes to pick up an extra shift at work, sometimes because they get sick because their immune systems are weak from malnutrition. 

When people my age look back on their college days, they often recall being “starving” students. But, back in a time when it was possible to complete a university education with some scholarships, a modest student loan and a part-time job, few of my peers were ever truly hungry.

I relived painful memories of abscesses, root canals, pulled bicuspids and more in ghoulish, visceral detail as I read Mary Otto’s horribly sad book, “Teeth: The Story of Beauty, Inequality and the Struggle for Oral Health in America.”

I’ve given birth to three babies, shattered my wrist, broken my tailbone twice, gotten tattooed, and, once, when I was suspected of having contracted West Nile Virus, had two consecutive spinal taps (one failed) in the name of advancing medical students’ knowledge while securing a diagnosis.
