En este viaje, Pence buscará remarcar el compromiso del Gobierno de Trump con Latinoamérica y reforzar el esfuerzo multilateral para aislar a Venezuela, inmersa en una profunda crisis económica y con la reciente instauración de una Asamblea Nacional Constituyente que Washington considera "ilegítima".

At a joint press conference with President Santos, Pence also took the occasion to condemn the violent incident on Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia, describing it as a tragedy, in which three people were killed and more than 20 wounded during a march by white supremacists.

Both leaders met in Washington and agreed to work for peace and democracy in Venezuela. With an agenda focusing on security, fighting drug trafficking and controlling illegal immigration, Varela is expected to meet today with Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly.

In the context of expansion of organized crime in Mexico, migrants have become easy targets, as they are more visible, easily identifiable as migrants and, in many cases, they walk on a predetermined route. At least 400 immigrants were killed on their way from Central America to the US in 2015.

Estados Unidos impuso hoy sanciones al presidente del Tribunal Supremo de Justicia (TSJ) de Venezuela, Maikel Moreno, y otros siete jueces por "usurpar la autoridad" de la Asamblea Nacional, y pidió al mandatario venezolana, Nicolás Maduro, que libere a los presos políticos y "devuelva el poder al pueblo".

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos confirmed Sunday that at least 210 people died and 203 were injured in the mudslides that buried or wiped away part of the city of Mocoa, promising that the southern jungle city will be rebuilt.
