Latinos in Hollywood: Edward James Olmos to receive Platino honor award

The 70-year-old Olmos, a son of Mexican immigrants who was born in Los Angeles, broke ground for Hispanics in Hollywood and won two Golden Globe awards, one for "The Burning Season" and another for his role as Lieutenant Martin "Marty" Castillo in "Miami Vice."

About 1,000 demonstrators arrived from Washington, New York, Los Angeles, Arizona, North Carolina, New Mexico, Maryland and Virginia and protested with other Texas organizations to express their disagreement with SB4, which allows local authorities to question the immigration status of people who, for example, are detained or arrested for a traffic violation.

The data confirms it. Studies show that illegal immigrants commit crimes at lower levels than the native-born. The FBI reports that cities with high numbers of illegal immigrants are among the safest in the country.

 When they criticize laws against hate crimes, conservatives claim we shouldn’t create special classes of victims. 

Well, forget all that. It turns out that they feel differently when they can get political mileage from exploiting the public’s fear of illegal immigrants. Then they’re all in.

Alejandrina Guzman is the new student body president at the University of Texas at Austin. As the top representative of the UT student body, Guzman will focus on protecting undocumented students and promoting a petition to declare U.T a "sanctuary campus."
