The region is scheduled to hold a referendum on independence from Spain on Sunday, despite fierce opposition from Madrid and the Justice. Mariano Rajoy’s government has ordered the LAw Enforcement Agencies to take control of polling stations to avoid people going to vote.

Barcelona attack: Ripoll, the Pyrenees town that spawned a terrorist cell

 The Spanish authorities said that the attacks that killed at least 14 people in Barcelona and Cambrils appeared to be part of a terrorist cell’s extensive plot led by the imam of a the small mountain town of Ripoll. He may have died a day before the attacks when explosives that the group was manufacturing accidentally detonated.

On Tuesday Mariano Rajoy will be meeting with Trump to discuss bilateral relations and international issues such as cooperation in the fight against terrorism, the threats from North Korea and the current situation in Venezuela. The situation in Catalonia is not part of the agenda, although it will be an issue to which both will refer.
