The popular US vintage cars of the 1940s and '50s, still seen driving around the streets of Cuba, played the leading role at the CubaNostalgia fair in Miami. The CubaNostalgia program commemorates the independence of the Caribbean country that is celebrated every May 20.

Navigating the cultural divide in a country once off limits for American visitors can be tricky, but with travel restrictions lowered thanks to President Obama's changes and a bit of preparation Americans can now enjoy the capital city's wide variety of cultural delights like a native.

[OP-ED]: Globalization’s false sins

 05/17/2017 - 08:26
Las importaciones a menudo son más baratas que los productos norteamericanos, ayudan especialmente a las familias de bajos ingresos, cuyos presupuestos constan de más productos manufacturados, donde el descenso de los precios fue agudo.
English

Globalization has gotten a bad rap. The Trump White House associates it with all manner of economic evil, especially job loss. The administration has made undoing the damage a central part of its economic strategy. This will almost certainly fail and disappoint, because globalization’s ill-effects have been wildly exaggerated.

Imports are often cheaper than U.S. products. Think clothes, shoes, consumer electronics. Trade especially aids lower-income households whose budgets are weighted toward manufactured products, where price declines have been steep.

[OP-ED]: Are living standards truly stagnant?

 04/13/2017 - 08:14
English

It may turn out that the widespread belief that most Americans’ incomes have stagnated for years is, well, false or at least overstated.

The rise in inequality may make Americans “feel worse ... even if their material goods consumption is rising.” Or maybe it’s just disappointment. People got less than they expected, and the pace of change was so slow that it seemed like stagnation.

[OP-ED]: Philadelphia DA Seth Williams: Cold to Injustice/Hot for Corruption?

 03/24/2017 - 15:41
At the very time Williams campaigned in 2009 on changing DA Office culture – like refusal to correct injustices – he engaged in the same conduct he condemned by rejecting pleas to help those cousins.
English

The 50-page federal indictment released recently that charged Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams with 23 counts of corrupt misconduct did not reference an egregious injustice committed by Williams that revolved around defiant refusal to acknowledge grievous errors.

Hundreds of women took the streets in downtown Philly to raise their voices against the laboral, political and economic inequities. Photo: Peter Fitzpatrick/AL DÍA News.

Even before five o'clock in the afternoon, dozens of women with posters, megaphones, and pink caps were being seen walking downtown. The meeting was in Logan Square, in the heart of Philadelphia. The occasion? Well, that depends on the perspective: for an unaware bystander (who generally has no perspective), it was one more celebration of International Women's Day.
