Donald Trump won a political victory when he convinced the CEO of Carrier’s parent company, United Technologies, to keep 800 jobs in Indiana, instead of relocating them to Mexico. The Atlantic reports about why Trump's efforts run counter to a broader global trend,as most factory jobs haven’t been outsourced, they’ve just disappeared thanks to automation.

Carrier, an air conditioning manufacturer from Indiana, was planning to outsource production to Mexico to save in labour costs, but Donald Trump has decided to show off his protectionist magic wand and save at least about a thousand jobs. Carrier was already used as an icon of the US industrial crisis during Trumps campaign. The president Elect also put Carrier as an example of the collateral damages of free trade agreements with Mexico and Canada (NAFTA).
