On the same day as Trump appeared to back down on his demand for funding from Congress, Mexican foreign minister Luis Videgaray called the idea ofbuilding a border wall“unfriendly, “a hostile act” and “unlikely to fulfill the objectives” of stopping the flow of migrants and illegal merchandise into the United States.

[OP-ED]: La madre de todos los ‘blufs’

 04/19/2017 - 08:02

Yes, that’s what the heated rhetoric coming from Washington about North Korea –and being responded to in no less bellicose tones by the Asian country – is: a nasty war of words. Rest assured that no bullets, no rockets, no mother of all bombs, not to mention atomic weapons are about to be fired, dropped or exchanged. Which, of course, is great.

[OP-ED]: How to avoid Trump Derangement Syndrome

 04/18/2017 - 10:41
Many of Trump’s campaign promises and policies are idiotic and unworkable. It was always likely that he would reverse them, as he has begun to do this week on several fronts. EFE

I didn’t really believe that there was such a thing as Trump Derangement Syndrome -- hatred of Donald Trump so intense that it impairs people’s judgment.

[OP-ED]: When straight talk is crazy talk

 02/02/2017 - 08:35
Drastic actions -- like the temporary ban on arrivals from certain predominantly Muslim countries -- bring with them the potential for backlash that is greater than the affections of those who are pleased with them. On Saturday, when even green card holders were stuck in airports, unable to re-enter the country after having traveled overseas on business, study or vacation, the results were messy and angry. EFE

What are we to make of a man who seems unable to keep himself from making false statements, yet fundamentally keeps his word?

Donald Trump as president is something that we’ve rarely seen before: A self-styled straight-talker who didn’t disappoint his most fervent supporters by tacking to the center after claiming victory.
