A report by the CBO, an independent government agency says the Senate Republican health-care bill would result in 22 million people losing their insurance over the next decade. That’s little improvement over the unpopular House version, though the bill’s deep spending cuts would reduce the deficit by $321 billion in the same period.

If you feel that after the last election the inmates are running the asylum, you are not alone. The main lunatic seems to be the president himself, who last week in Miami showed once again that his concept (or his grasp) of reality does not go beyond, well, very bad “reality shows.”

[OP-ED]: Preparing for the next panic -- or not

 06/06/2017 - 17:15
The “American economy will need a coordinated response, particularly if the entire financial system suffers a panic or lack of liquidity.” Bankruptcy judges cannot provide this response. It is best left to the Treasury, Federal Reserve and FDIC.
English

When the next financial crisis hits -- an event that may be years or decades away -- we will learn whether this Congress and the president drew the right lessons from the 2008-09 financial crisis. Congress is arguing over whether government can avoid “bailouts” of large financial institutions and still prevent a full-blown crisis. With all of President Trump’s trials and tribulations, hardly anyone is paying attention.

[OP-ED]: Documentary ‘Elián’ Brings Back Painful Memories for Cubans

 06/06/2017 - 16:28
Elián nació en Cárdenas, una tranquila ciudad costera tres horas al este de La Habana. Y yo también. Solo para sumar otro elemento de coincidencia, mi hermano menor, que vive en Miami y es médico, también se llama Elián. Foto: Cibercuba

“Elián,” a recently released documentary about the saga of Elián González, the little Cuban castaway that became a worldwide cause célèbre 17 years ago, is bringing back painful memories of the Cold War-induced bitter political battle between South Florida Cuban-Americans and Cubans on the island. At a time when President Trump seems poised to reverse Barack Obama’s measures and go back to a Cuba policy of hostility and irrationality, the film becomes even more distressing.

Why EPA has dismissed half of its key board’s scientific advisers?

Nine scientists have been dismissed from the EPA’s 18-person Board of Scientific Counselors—ostensibly to include more voices from regulated industries, though the scientists say their work was apolitical and did not involve regulations. The US government has also postponed an important meeting scheduled for Tuesday to determine whether the country should or should not withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change, a matter that President Donald Trump promised to decide this month.

[OP-ED]: Why should Obama have to be saintlier than his predecessors?

Former US President Barack Obama is being honored for 'his enduring commitment to democratic ideals and elevating the standard of political courage in a new century,' with specific mention of his expansion of healthcare options, his leadership on confronting climate change and his restoration of diplomatic relations with Cuba. The best thing about President Barack Obama’s historic presidency is that it’s over. We can now look back on it -- and him -- in far fonder terms than it was experienced live.
